  • aljazeera

I also had the liberty of watching aljazeera everyday... since we always lived in Arab hotels... it's the funniest thing... you have that and sometimes we would get Fox News.  they're both on totally opposite ends.  in Jerusalem however, we only got aljazeera and other Palestinian channels.  aljazeera is totally crazy... I can see why the hatred is so deep... the news they report is so one-sided, it's ridiculous.

One time, they were retracing the past 14 days of the War in Gaza... so I expected them to summarize what Israel did and what Hamas did... nope... from day one... they said Israel bombed Gaza... and day 2... Israel did so and so... nothing about Hamas shooting rockets into Israeli zone first.  and they reported that the UN stopped giving aids out of nowhere... or because one of their drivers got hurt.  but nothing about how Hamas was smuggling in artillery on those trucks and that's why it was stopped.  It's just amazing how one sided aljazeera is... it's no wonder they would hate Israeli's so much more... not that Israel is any way in the right or treating Palestinians rightly... but it's media like this that gives blowtorch effects to the already sensitive religious agendas...

  • lost in Jerusalem

we had one free day there, so we decided to go on an excursion by ourselves, to check out the New City.  (vs the Old City which we already saw that morning)  A wouldn't believe me that everything in New City was closed, since it was Saturday!!  So he wanted to walk around New City... we walked and walked and walked... and finally found it... everything was CLOSED... but then i saw it... the big beautiful golden arches... muhahahaha.... i was so hungry by then... McD's was an excellent idea!  it was the only thing that was opened!!!  I had a chicken sandwich which sucked...  it was breaded differently... more like shake and bake chicken.... but without and taste.

I never though the words... "I miss American food." would ever be on my lips.... I was wrong!!!  We have falafels like everyday for lunch.. and buffet for breakfast and dinner every day... I was soooo sick of it... I just wanted a hamburger. or even fast food!  so McD's was sooooooo good.  I didn't think I'd get sick of falafels... since they're so tasty... but now the smell of if makes me want to puke.  hahahaha.

so after McD's... we ventured home... but we got lost... and we had no map... we had a general map, but it didn't have the small streets we were on... so we ended up walking around for 3 more hours... and in between, we walked into a religious community.... that was not a very good idea.  before we walked in, we asked some Jews how to get back.  they suggested a long way... to walk to city hall, and then back up to our place, rather than cut through another street.  then we wanted to make sure and asked some hippie Jews, and they told us to cut through Prophet Street... which was what we took... but that was a big mistake... we headed right into the religious community.  it was Sabbath for them... and everyone was out on the streets walking home.  As we passed by, the parents would grab their kids tight like we were some sorta animal.  (now we know what o-langs feel like...).  the older kids would grab the younger ones to make sure they don't go near us.  we couldn't talk to anyone, or ask anyone for directions... because they can't talk to gentiles.  we're unclean.  it was the weirdest feeling... kinda felt like the lepers in the Bible... where no one wanted to go near them... like they were a curse... but luckily we got out of that place.. and eventually found our way back to the hotel...  I was soooo happy to see cars and Arabs.

I never thought the words..."I miss the Arabs." would ever be on my lips either.  but yup... we always lived in Arab hotels... and in Arab parts of town... I missed them... they were the only ones that would talk to us... strangely enough.  hahahhaa.

I think it was a bit of a culture-shock, as well as reality-shock.  Definitely a very interesting trip!
